# Printer Search > A sourced comparison of every consumer FDM 3D printer sold new in the US, used to answer one buyer's question. Data as of 2026-09-06. This site ranks *configurations*, a printer plus the multi-material unit and any accessory the buyer's stated use requires, rather than bare printers, and it prices them all-in including 6.25% Massachusetts sales tax against a $1,300 ceiling. Read the ranking as one buyer's weighted judgment, not a universal verdict. The weights are stated, adjustable in the tool, and re-run under four alternate weightings in the sensitivity analysis. Every specification, price and reliability claim carries a source URL, a retrieval date and an evidence tier; anything unverified is marked unverified rather than filled in. Prices move, and firmware and openness policies move faster, so check the retrieval date on any number before relying on it. ## Start here - [The comparison tool](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/tool/): All 67 ranked configurations with the weights as sliders. Move a weight and the order changes. Works offline; every row opens its itemized costs, per-judgment reasoning and sources. - [Decision memo](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/memo/): The recommendation in three pages: what to buy, what the X2D premium does and does not buy, the best non-Bambu option, the openness situation, and whether waiting is rational. - [Printer Search](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/): The ranking, the tool, and where everything else lives. An index, not an answer. ## The report - [Methodology and coverage](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/report/methodology/): How the field was searched, what counts as evidence, how the eight weighted judgments work, and what was covered versus excluded. - [Market landscape](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/report/landscape/): The categories a buyer is choosing between: bedslingers, enclosed CoreXY machines with spool-switching color units, toolchangers, kits and refurbished machines, and what each architecture actually costs you. - [Shortlist profiles](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/report/shortlist/): A standalone profile of each shortlisted configuration: what it is, who it suits, what is good, what is bad, what it costs configured, and its openness situation. - [Head to head](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/report/head-to-head/): The Bambu P2S against the X2D against the top three non-Bambu configurations, judgment by judgment, with itemized costs. - [What if the weights are wrong](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/report/sensitivity/): The whole ranking recomputed under four alternate weightings. Three different configurations win, and the report says so rather than hiding it. - [Risks and unknowns](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/report/risks/): What could make this recommendation wrong: firmware and policy volatility, prices that only work on sale, the evidence still missing, and the safety findings on several brands. - [What this study got wrong](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/caveats/): The sixteen prices that were wrong in the first pass, the scoring pass that had to be redone, and every place two sources disagreed. Kept on one page rather than repeated above every number. - [The full report](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/report/): Every chapter in one page: methodology, coverage, landscape, profiles, head-to-head, sensitivity, risks and the recommendation. ## Data - [Sources](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/sources/): All 629 sources with URLs, retrieval dates and evidence tiers. - [Glossary](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/glossary/): Every term in plain language, written for someone who has never owned a 3D printer. - [configurations.json](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/data/configurations.json): Raw data: configurations. - [ranking.json](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/data/ranking.json): Raw data: ranking. ## For NotebookLM - [Full Report](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/report/full_report.pdf): The full report as a text-native PDF, formatted for reading and for NotebookLM. - [Decision Memo](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/report/decision_memo.pdf): The decision memo as a text-native PDF. - [00-source-of-truth.md](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/notebooklm/00-source-of-truth.md): The compact authority: every figure any notebook output may quote, in fixed tables, generated from the data files. - [For NotebookLM](https://printer-search.rpaprocki.com/notebooklm/): The eight-file upload set, led by a generated source-of-truth file that carries every figure any notebook output may quote.
